Bridge Manitoba will be hosting a Helen Shields Rookie-Master game on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7:00 pm (registration at 6:30). This game will be in lieu of the regular Wednesday night team game.
The Helen Shields Rookie-Master game is a Canada-wide game run by the Canadian Bridge Federation and named after a well-known teacher and promoter of duplicate bridge to newer players. In this game, "rookies", defined as players with 100 masterpoints or less, are partnered with "masters", defined as players with over 100 masterpoints. Players across the country play the same hands, and printed hand analyses prepared by top Canadian players are provided after the game. The pair with the best percentage score in Canada is declared National Winners and receives a trophy. The pairs with the top percentage score in each Zone receive a plaque. All club winners receive certificates.
This is a fun and educational event and we encourage both rookies and masters to come out! If you are interested, please contact Dave West at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 204-255-5823.
Please note that due to increased sanction fees for this game, card fees will be $10.
Also note that although there is a masterpoint cut off of 100, the real intention is that the player be fairly new to the game of duplicate bridge. Players that have let their ACBL membership lapse or have not been remitting master points for recording, although below the 100 master point level, do not necessarily fit the definition of “rookie”. Club managers or game directors may prohibit a pair from playing in this game, if they feel that the partnership does not include a player that fits the definition of a “Rookie”.
