CAROLE ANN MACDONALD
August 3, 1941 – March 23, 2020
On a beautiful, sunny spring morning, Carole MacDonald passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, the city of her birth, after a three year long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Carole is survived by her brother Jim MacDonald (Roberta); her sons, Jim Chliboyko (Carla) and Greg Chliboyko (Kathy); her grandchildren, Charlie, Maia, Avery and Sydney; her loyal Black Lab cross Cole; as well as nephews, cousins, great- nephews, great-nieces and many friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, John and Marjorie (Bragg) MacDonald, who both had many nicknames, but who were known later on as Poppa and Nan.
Carole (aka Carlie) grew up in Norwood Flats and graduated from Nelson McIntyre High School. She often spoke fondly of the family's times on both Pinedale Avenue and their next home on Harris Boulevard in St. James. She said that two of the favourite times in her life were her own childhood and her sons' childhoods.
In the 1950s, Poppa and Nan bought a cottage at Clearwater Bay on Lake of the Woods, which became another one of her favourite places in the world. She eventually bought her own big yellow canoe, and spent hours exploring the lake with it.
Carole married fellow Nelson McIntyre alum Terry Chliboyko and they moved to Vancouver after the Great Winnipeg Blizzard of 1966. It was in Vancouver where Jim and Greg were born. After the couple separated in 1975, Carole moved back to Winnipeg with the boys, settling in St. Vital. Her two most prominent jobs were with Ringer's Drugs on Pembina and at the Manitoba Club, where she helped to keep everything running for almost 10 years. She eventually upgraded her word processing skills and went to work for her brother Jim, amongst others.
After she retired, she became an avid duplicate bridge player and she joined an arts and entertainment group who got together on Fridays for dinners, concerts, plays and movies. Carole was also an active volunteer, dog walking for the Winnipeg Humane Society and also working for the Winnipeg School Division Adult EAL program.
Carole loved her family, including the four-legged members. She loved reading the daily paper with a rum and coke before dinner. She really loved her duplicate bridge, having joined a couple of leagues. She loved watching great movies and never missed the Academy Awards. She loved going over old letters and photographs and reminiscing about her life. She loved capturing the natural world around her in ink and watercolour and oil. She loved tanning on the dock in the sunshine with a good book. Carole was grateful every day for simple pleasures.
A great thank you goes out to all the fine organizations, medical workers and volunteers who helped Mom out during her battle, and there were many of you. From the folks at CancerCare Manitoba, Riverview, Health Sciences Centre and Meals on Wheels, to the pharmacist who delivered a prescription to her house on their way home late one Friday night after work. All of you have our deepest gratitude.
The family would like to also acknowledge her great friends, Brian and Gaye Burridge for their wonderful support of Carole over the last few years.
Mom proved to be a tough gal throughout her illness and we were all proud of how brave she was and how well she handled the challenges.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Winnipeg Humane Society, the organization which introduced Cole to her, or to CancerCare Manitoba, the organization which took such good care of her.
